Sea, sky, and the sun

Hikoshima Smelting Co., Ltd. (Shimonoseki-shi, Yamaguchi) recently completed the Hikoshima Smelting Photovoltaic Power Station. The station began operating in March 2016, and has an output of about 2MW (megawatts).
A total of 9,284 solar panels have been installed in the power station, and the annual power generation is expected to be about 2,500,000 kWh, which is equivalent to the annual power consumption of about 670 general households. It will sell all the electricity it generates to the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. during its first 20 years of operation.
The nickname for the power station was decided by collecting ideas in-house. The friendly nickname “Solar Hiko” was selected from the more than 100 names that were submitted.
Hikoshima Smelting will celebrate its 100th anniversary in April 2017. In the eyes of company that aims to be the world’s largest wet smelter of recycled zinc, the start of operation of the new facility Solar Hiko stands as a symbol of the future of the company.
